Bill Cunningham, Legend of Fashion Photography Passed

On saturday afternoon, I'm crying because my inspiration just passed away. I heard the news if Bill Cunningham who work in New York Times passed. The legendary fashion photographer Bill Cunningham died in Manhattan at age 87. Mr. Cunningham died because stroke.

I still don't believe if Bill Cunningham passed. Because I wish I could have seen him in person, but I never did. Mr. Cunningham defined much of what we call #NYstyle. He was a devoted artist and icon that will be missed. If you read on online newspaper today or fashion magazine today, all person who knows Bill talk about his legacy.

Every person who loves Bill, said like this on NYTimes:
  • Anna Wintour said, "I don't know how many times he has taken my photograph, but we all dress for Bill. You feel he's the only one who notices or cares how you dress. I wonder if Bill will like this. And it's always a flattering picture he chooses. He picks everything carefully, so you will look your best. He's a very seductive guy."
  • Polly Mellen said, "He photographed me a lot. And sometimes I didn't even know he was photographing me, which was the whole point. I remmeber he photographed me in a pair of trendy Comme des Garcons shoes with fox pompoms. He's very hung up on shoes. He's very hung up on originality."
  • Oscar De La Renta said, "More than anyone else in the city, he has the whole visual history of the last 40 or 50 years of New York. It's the total scope of fashion in the life of New York. And he's such an unbelieably discreet man. I don't know anything about his life, except his bicycle."

I guess I will miss his voice on new york times fashion. I still remember his wisdom "The best Fashion Show is definitely on the street. Always has been and always will be.". Bill Cunningham shoots fashionable clothes, but could not care less about what he himself wears. The contradiction of obsession and control defines Bill Cunningham's world. Bill lives in a fantasy of fashion and beauty with his eyes, but has a workaday life at the New York Times. He spends evenings at high society extravagant social events, but his home is secluded in the file cabinet filled little apartment. You should watch "Bill Cunningham Documentary" to know more about Mr. Cunningham.
